Two new publications on coralline red algae are available for purchase in hard copy or alternatively for downloading electronically without cost. Both were published in association with a symposium to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mikael H. Foslie. Both appeared on 18 October 2005 in the NYNU museum series Gunneria.

Titles, authors and abstracts are as follows:

Woelkerling, W.J., Gustavsen, G., Myklebost, H.E., Prestø, T., Såstad, S.M. 2005. The coralline red algal herbarium of Mikael Foslie: revised catalogue with analyses. Gunneria 77: 1-625.

On a world-scale, the nongeniculate coralline red algal herbarium of Mikael Foslie arguably constitutes the single most important resource for scientists engaged in taxonomic studies of these algae. Foslie described more new taxa of nongeniculate corallines than any other person, and his herbarium is extremely rich in type material. Type specimens are critical in taxonomic work because they underpin the correct application of names to taxa and thus bring stability to the use of names in taxonomic, ecological and other research. The richness of type and other historically significant specimens in Foslie¹s nongeniculate coralline herbarium renders it an international scientific treasure. There is no doubt that Foslie¹s material will continue to play a pivotal role in the development of our taxonomic understanding of one of the more diverse and ecologically important groups of marine algae.

Thor, E., Johansen S. and Nilsen, L.S. 2005. The collection of botanical letters to Mikael H. Foslie in the Gunnerus Library: a catalogue. Gunneria 78: 1-268.

The catalogue includes records of letters in the Gunnerus Library received by the renowned expert on coralline algae, Mikael H. Foslie, during 1884-1909. Nearly 2000 letters have been analysed and the information categorized in order to make the content of the letters more readily available for studies in taxonomy and the history of science.
