A few years ago, and while coring (water depth ~100 m) in the Pagassitikos Gulf Greece (for information see: Karageorgis, A.P., Sioulas, A.I., and Anagnostou, Ch.L., 2002. Use of surface sediments in Pagassitikos Gulf, Greece, to detect anthropogenic influence. Geo-Marine Letters, 21, 200-211) we encountered carbonate deposits (aragonite, dolomite and calcite) about 1.5 m downcore, covered by Holocene muds. The base of the mud layer was dated by 14C at ~12.000 BP. As in our team we are not carbonate specialists, we seek for collaboration to study in more detail the conditions which favoured the deposition of carbonate minerals. Note that in another gulf (Saronikos), similar deposits have been discovered, but at water depths of ~400 m. Though carbonate deposits in the two gulfs are of the same age, the morphology of the areas is quite different. Therefore we need to study carbonate minerals formation to both areas to unravel similarities and differences in the depositional conditions.
